(Fort Lauderdale, FL) Author Julie Perry will be speaking at 6:00 PM on January 18, 2007, at Bluewater Books & Charts in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Her new book, "The Insiders' Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess," addresses the steps that people interested in a career in the marine industry need to take in order to work on a yacht. The book is targeted mainly towards young people who want to get out and see the world, and it offers practical advice on how to obtain a job on a yacht, how to keep the job, how to make the necessary transitions, and much more.

Perry, who runs the website WorkOnAYacht.com, says, "The book is for anybody who has ever considered taking advantage of the great careers that the marine industry has to offer. Even if you've never set foot on a yacht before, you should consider it as a great option." Perry, an internet marketing professional, is originally from Indiana, and she spent three years traveling the world as a yacht stewardess.

If you're interested in a career crewing aboard a yacht, if you know someone who is, or even if you just want to come out and

The marine industry generates more income for the State of Florida than the Superbowl, the Citrus Industry, and the Cruise Industry, and yet many of the yachts that visit or stay in South Florida are experiencing a shortage of crew. In an industry with an $18.4 billion statewide impact, the lack of a workforce is a serious problem.

This event is designed to educate potential crew and employees of the benefits of working on a yacht. Representatives from various crew placement agencies and training programs will be on-hand to speak to attendees, and free copies of the new interactive DVD, Navigating Your Career, will be available from the Marine Industries Association of South Florida. "Many people don't realize that they already possess skills that are essential to working on a yacht," Perry says. "Anyone trained in hospitality, auto mechanics, massage, or a number of other things could easily make the transition to a career in yachting." She points out that most jobs in yachting offer competitive salaries and benefits like housing, while also giving employees a chance to travel the world.
