There are only five more days until teams of Vikings, dragons, football players and aliens splash off in their manmade gondolas along downtown Fort Lauderdale's New River for Red Bull Candola. The event will take place between Huizenga Plaza and Esplanade Park on Saturday, April 14. Between those two points, the New River waterway will have limited access from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Candola organizers are working with the City of Fort Lauderdale and the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Marine Unit to ensure all water traffic is properly and safely executed.
If marine traffic becomes heavy during these hours, the competition will be put on hold to let boats pass. The water taxi originally scheduled for Riverfront will also be rerouted to east of the 3rd Avenue Bridge during the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Gondolas will never be the same after Red Bull Candola takes over the Venice of America for the second year. Twenty-eight teams of three will race their manmade and human-powered boats down the New River where they'll be scored on their creativity, showmanship and overall race time. For a chance at the title, "Big Bambino", teams will also perform a 30-second skit for the judges before their race.
