Fort Lauderdale - Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue (FLOR) is offering its Junior Lifeguard Program from July 18 through July 29, 2005. The two-week program, which is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday-Friday, is open to children nine to 17 years old. Training will be held at Fort Lauderdale Beach and the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex pool, located at 501 Seabreeze Boulevard.

The cost to participate in the program is $85 per child and registration, which is on a first-come, first-served basis, is limited to 50 participants. Registration for the Junior Lifeguard Program will be held on Monday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To register for the program, please call Lieutenant Jim McCrady at 954-828-4577 or e-mail JMcCrady@fortlauderdale.gov.

The FLOR program will teach children activities consistent with ocean lifeguarding, such as running, swimming, paddleboard use, kayak paddling, rescue buoy technique, shallow-water entry and surf dash approach training. Recreational activities such as volleyball, kickball, dodge ball, snorkeling, and beach flags are also a part of the program.

The basic requirements for participation in the FLOR Junior Lifeguard Program are as follows:

  1. Be able to swim 100 yards in under or around two minutes.

  2. Be able to tread water for a minimum of five minutes.

  3. Be able to swim 25 feet under water.

On the last day of the program, an inter-squad Junior Lifeguard Competition will be held. This is a voluntary event and includes the same disciplines that professional lifeguards use when participating in their tournaments. The competition is a relay-race format and emphasis is placed on fun, teamwork, and participation.

For more information about the FLOR Junior Lifeguard Program, please contact Lieutenant Jim McCrady at 954-828-4577 or e-mail JMcCrady@fortlauderdale.gov.
