There are two types of fishing charter boats: a deep sea fishing or drift boat (aka "head boat") and a sportfishing yacht. Typically in South Florida a sportfishing charter yacht will cost about $650 for a half day (4 hours) and $1000 for a full day (8 hours). Some captains will have 6 hour rates, so make sure to ask.
These sport fishing charter yachts can accommodate up to 6 passengers and will include tackle, bait, fishing licenses, cleaning the fish and ice to keep it cool for the ride home. You can bring your own drinks and snacks, and if you want to take home your catch, a cooler. In South Florida and Ft. Lauderdale, fishing charters are offered on two main types of vessels: open, center console sportfishing boats in the 25-35 ft range, and Hatteras type sportfishing yachts, and there are pros and cons for each one. Make sure you ask the captain what kind of boat you will be going out on so you can prepare accordingly with sunscreen and lots of water to ward off dehydration.
